FDA To Deploy Artificial Intelligence Across Agency

The FDA plans to widely implement artificial intelligence across the agency after a successful pilot program. Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary has ordered all FDA centers to fully integrate AI by the end of June. The agency will use a common, secure generative AI system integrated with its internal data platforms. Makary highlighted AI's potential to accelerate the review process for new therapies and save scientists valuable time. AI, using algorithms, can perform complex tasks like learning and making predictions. The FDA aims to modernize its processes, as some tasks once taking days now take minutes. The rollout is led by Jeremy Walsh, the chief AI officer, and Sridhar Mantha. Former President Trump encouraged AI adoption through an executive order promoting American AI dominance. The White House also issued a memorandum supporting government's use of this technology. The FDA has previously acknowledged AI's potential biases while also emphasizing its ability to speed up drug application reviews.
