FIDO Alliance Working on Making Passkeys Portable Across Platforms

The FIDO Alliance is working on new specifications to enable secure transfer of passkeys between different password managers and platforms. This initiative is the result of collaboration among members of the FIDO Alliance's Credential Provider Special Interest Group, including major tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft. Passkeys are an industry standard developed by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium, offering a more secure alternative to traditional passwords. They allow users to sign in to apps and websites using a fingerprint, face scan, or passcode, similar to unlocking their devices. Passkeys are also resistant to online attacks like phishing, making them more secure than other methods. The new specifications, called Credential Exchange Protocol and Credential Exchange Format, aim to standardize the secure transfer of credentials across different providers. This addresses a current limitation where passkeys are often tied to specific ecosystems or password managers. The development of these specifications is a significant step forward in promoting the adoption of passkeys as a secure authentication method. The FIDO Alliance's initiative has the potential to make passkeys more widely available and user-friendly. By standardizing the transfer of passkeys, the FIDO Alliance is working to create a more secure and convenient authentication experience for users.
