Firefox 142's Link Previews Have a New Option: AI-Generated Summaries

Firefox 142 introduces enhanced AI capabilities, including link summarization and developer support for LLM extensions. A new "Preview Link" feature allows users to see summaries of linked content by hovering, long-pressing, or right-clicking a link. These summaries can optionally include AI-generated key points processed locally for privacy. The link preview feature is currently rolling out gradually to English-speaking regions like the US, Canada, UK, and Australia. Eligibility also requires users to have more than 3 GB of available RAM. This release also welcomes twenty new volunteer contributors who submitted their first code change. For developers, Firefox 142 now enables LLM support within extensions through wllama. Wllama is a Wasm binding that interfaces with llama.cpp. This integration allows developers to run Meta's Llama LLM and other models locally or in the cloud. Overall, the update signifies a significant step in integrating AI into the user experience and development environment of Firefox.
