Four ways to be more selfish at work

Career success in today's flexible and ever-changing work environment requires being more outspoken, vocal, and self-directed, which can be uncomfortable for many. This is a departure from the old rules of keeping one's head down and waiting for opportunities to be awarded. The reality is that career success requires self-advocacy, which many struggle with due to years of seeing it as selfish. However, taking the time to explore and advocate for oneself more vocally at work helps individuals and colleagues succeed and thrive. Running up someone else's ladder can lead to burnout and uphold outdated norms, whereas knowing oneself and pursuing what one wants leads to a healthier workplace culture. To begin this process, one can look back to their past and revisit early desires, exploring what motivated them and what has changed or stayed the same. Another step is to explore favorite moments at work and in life, connecting activities to feelings and ideal weekly cadences. Seeking out inspiration from others, such as through networking and LinkedIn, can also help cast a wider net for new ideas and examples. Finally, speaking up at work and beyond, putting needs and wants in writing, and taking small steps towards change can lead to increased confidence and self-advocacy.
