Free cholesterol tests on the NHS are great – but here’s the five-point health MOT I’d really like to see | Devi Sridhar
Many people are unaware they are pre-diabetic, have hypertension, or are at high risk of a heart attack. Professor Devi Sridhar emphasizes the importance of prevention, stating it's often overlooked in the NHS. A significant challenge is not just healthcare spending but its allocation. In England, the NHS budget has increasingly prioritized acute hospital care for the already ill. Consequently, funding for primary care, like GPs, has declined. This shift means the NHS spends more on treating severe illnesses after they occur. The system is paying heavily for conditions like heart attacks and strokes. Instead, resources are not adequately directed towards identifying at-risk individuals. Early intervention to reduce the likelihood of developing these serious conditions is lacking. The focus is on treating advanced diseases rather than preventing them upstream.
