Garmin Beats Apple to Market with Satellite-Connected Smartwatch
Garmin has launched its Fenix 8 Pro smartwatch, featuring satellite connectivity through its inReach technology. This allows users to send location check-ins and text messages via satellite using the Garmin Messenger app. The device also offers cellular connectivity for calls, voice messages, and LiveTrack location sharing. For emergencies, an SOS feature connects to the Garmin Response center for assistance. The Fenix 8 Pro boasts a bright microLED display, durable metal buttons, and a sensor guard. It tracks health metrics, provides endurance and hill scores, and offers ECG functionality. Available in 47mm and 51mm sizes with AMOLED or microLED displays, pricing starts at $1,200. The microLED version costs $2,000 and has a shorter battery life. These models will be available on September 8, just before Apple's expected unveiling of its satellite-enabled Apple Watch Ultra 3. Unlike Apple's rumored free satellite service, Garmin charges for its inReach plans, starting at $7.99 per month.
