Generative AI fields now available in ECS allowing parity and compatibility with OTel
Elastic developed the Elastic Common Schema (ECS) to simplify data normalization from diverse sources. ECS is an open-source specification that standardizes event data fields for Elasticsearch, including logs and metrics. In April 2023, Elastic contributed ECS to OpenTelemetry Semantic Conventions to foster a cross-industry open schema. Elastic remains committed to contributing to OpenTelemetry and merges crucial updates back into ECS. This approach supports Elastic users who want to run both ECS and OpenTelemetry concurrently. The increasing use of generative AI necessitates new fields to capture the context of AI requests and responses. These fields are valuable for observability, security, and normalizing logs from various AI vendors. Users will benefit from OpenTelemetry support and integrated log solutions compatible with both ECS and OpenTelemetry. Elastic reserves the right to determine the release timing of any described features. The post may reference third-party generative AI tools, over which Elastic has no control or liability. Users should exercise caution when using AI tools with sensitive information and review their privacy practices.
