Get started with GitLab Duo Agentic Chat in the web UI
GitLab launched Agentic Chat in May 2025 as an experimental feature building on GitLab Duo Chat. Unlike its predecessor, Agentic Chat can directly interact with GitLab APIs to perform actions on behalf of users. It is accessible within the GitLab UI for users with Duo Pro or Enterprise add-ons, as well as in various IDEs. To use it, users navigate to a group or project, click the GitLab Duo Chat button, and toggle to Agentic mode. Agentic Chat can manage issues by summarizing, finding specific ones, and allowing updates like adding labels or milestones. It also supports CI/CD by analyzing failed pipelines, suggesting fixes, and committing them to merge requests. The feature assists in crafting complex prompts for tasks like finding bug reports. Users can prompt Agentic Chat to create issue templates, improving report consistency. Effective prompting involves action-oriented verbs and clear criteria for bulk operations. Agentic Chat maintains context, allowing for chained requests and iterative refinement of tasks. Users can explore its capabilities by asking about available tools and then experimenting with issue management and CI/CD functionalities.
