Google and the Pentagon sign classified deal to give the Department of Defense unfettered access to its AI models
Google has permitted the US Department of Defense to utilize its AI models for any legal governmental purpose, as reported by The Information. The specific details of the agreement remain classified, concealing its full scope. An anonymous source claims Google aims to prevent the AI from being used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons without human oversight. However, Google lacks the ability to veto any government decisions regarding its AI technology. A Google spokesperson stated that this approach is supportive of national security with industry-standard practices. A significant number of Google employees have expressed strong concerns and signed an open letter to the CEO, opposing the deal. They believe this AI deployment could lead to inhumane applications and endanger civil liberties. OpenAI, xAI, are also involved in classified AI agreements with the US government. Anthropic, which previously refused to remove weapon and surveillance-related safeguards, was blacklisted by the government. The situation raises questions regarding the government's commitment to oversight in deploying AI for military purposes. Engadget has sought additional information from Google, pending a response.
