The European Union has fined Google €890 million for antitrust breaches related to its search and Google Play Store services. The European Commission found that Google illegally favored its own services, such as shopping and hotel deals, in search results over those of rivals. Additionally, Google prevented app developers from directing users to external, cheaper options for app purchases and subscriptions.Of the total fine, €460 million was for search practices and €430 million for app store rules. Google is now mandated to treat third-party services in search results fairly and without discrimination. It must also allow app developers to freely communicate and conclude contracts with users outside the Google Play Store.The Commission has ordered Google to implement these measures to end its non-compliance. While Google has already made some progress and is testing changes, it must comply with the decisions within 60 days. Failure to comply could result in periodic penalty payments of up to 5% of its global turnover.Google has the option to appeal the decisions. This action against Google follows similar regulatory battles, with Apple also facing fines and challenges from EU regulators regarding its App Store practices.
