Google has been compelled to make significant changes to its US Google Play Store following an antitrust case loss to Epic Games. For the first time since its 2008 launch, Google is allowing developers more freedom regarding external resources. Developers can now direct users to alternative app download sources and payment platforms outside the Play Store. This change stems from Epic Games' lawsuit initiated in 2020 over attempts to sell Fortnite content without Google's payment system. Unlike a similar case against Apple, Google's conduct was found to actively suppress alternative Android app stores. As a result of losing the case and subsequent appeal, Google is implementing the court-mandated changes. These updates allow developers to bypass Google's commission, potentially leading to lower prices for consumers. Google's support pages confirm these changes are currently only for the US Play Store. The company emphasizes that these policy adjustments are temporary and will remain in effect only while the district court's order is active. This court order is set to expire on November 1, 2027.
