Google is launching Gemini for Home, a generative AI upgrade to Google Assistant, on October 1st via an early access program. This new platform will be available on all existing and future Nest smart speakers and displays. Gemini for Home enables more natural conversations and complex, multi-step commands. Users can now give chained instructions and specify exceptions within commands. The AI assistant's capabilities extend beyond smart home control to include planning, suggestions, and advice. A feature called Gemini Live allows for continuous conversation without repeating the wake word. This rollout puts pressure on Apple, whose Siri update is not expected until 2026. Siri currently lacks the advanced reasoning and contextual automation that Gemini for Home offers. Apple's HomeKit relies on preconfigured automations and single-action commands.
