Google's Jules coding agent moves beyond chat with new command line and API

Google aims to deeply integrate its coding assistant, Jules, into developers' workflows beyond just chat interfaces. Two new features, a Jules API and a Jules Tools CLI, are designed to achieve this integration. The API will allow Jules to connect with IDEs, while the CLI will enable direct use within the command line. This move aligns with a broader industry trend of embedding AI agents into applications for increased user convenience. Developers can now access Jules directly from their terminals, facilitating tasks like testing, building, and debugging without leaving their workflow. The CLI provides installation via npm, with commands for prompting Jules and customizing its behavior. The API offers enterprises greater flexibility, enabling integration with platforms like Slack to trigger tasks directly from messages. This integration allows team members to initiate actions, such as bug fixes, directly from Slack, which then interacts with their CI/CD pipelines. Google has also implemented updates to reduce latency and resolve environmental issues. These updates include a file selector for adding context in chat and memory functionality for remembering user preferences. Management of environment variables has also been enhanced, granting Jules access during task execution. Overall, the response to these updates has been largely positive, though some confusion exists regarding Google's multiple coding agent CLI offerings.
