Gurman on HomeView: ‘Finished Units Have Been Sitting Boxed Up in Warehouses for the Better Part of a Year’

Apple's HomeView faced significant delays due to unfinished AI assistant software. The hardware was ready for production years ago, as evidenced by its design and internal components. This included an A18 processor and 8 gigabytes of memory, indicating it was conceived long before its eventual unveiling. Finished units were warehoused for nearly a year awaiting software completion. While the A18 chip and 8GB RAM are not inherently indicative of delays, they highlight the prolonged development cycle. Critically, HomeView's functionality was dependent on a robust Siri AI. However, this advanced Siri AI was not released until very recently. The extended development timeline is also suggested by former Apple employees celebrating their past contributions to the product on social media. Some of these employees had left the company a considerable time ago. This sustained development period underscores the challenges Apple encountered in synchronizing hardware and AI software. The company's initial vision for the assistant was not achievable with earlier software iterations.
