Gurman Says Second-Gen iPhone Air, Coming in Early 2027, Will Sport a 0.5× Ultra-Wide Second Camera

Apple is reportedly developing an iPhone Air second generation for release in spring 2027. Prototypes of this new model, internally codenamed V62, are said to include a second rear camera. This additional lens is intended to offer ultrawide-angle photography capabilities. The device is currently in advanced testing at Apple. Previous reports suggested the second camera could be either ultrawide or telephoto. Standard iPhones have historically featured 1x and 0.5x lenses, while Pro models include a telephoto lens. Prior to the iPhone 11, higher-end iPhones used a 2x telephoto lens as the secondary option. The inclusion of an ultrawide lens on the iPhone Air may be driven by its popularity or suitability for the device's thin design. Personal usage data indicates a modest but consistent use of both ultrawide and telephoto lenses for stills. For videos, the ultrawide lens is used more frequently than the telephoto. The author expresses a preference for a telephoto lens if limited to one additional option due to its enhanced zoom capabilities.
