Happy United States of America’s Columbus Day October 14, 2024

Today, the United States celebrates the proud heritage of Italian Americans, whose contributions have shaped the country's soul. Italian-American families share stories of their ancestors who immigrated to the US, chasing the American Dream and building the country's middle class. These stories include those of Italian-American artists, laborers, lawmakers, and leaders who never gave up on the idea of America. For many Italian Americans, Christopher Columbus' voyage remains a source of pride. However, their ancestors faced discrimination, and Columbus Day was founded in response to a xenophobic attack in 1892. Despite challenges, Italian Americans persisted and advanced the nation, challenging it to live up to its highest values. The US recognizes Italian Americans as a source of strength in the country's alliance with Italy, founded on shared values of democracy, freedom, and respect for human rights. Today, the US honors the history and heritage of Italian Americans and their contributions to realizing the full promise of America. President Joseph R. Biden Jr. proclaims October 14, 2024, as Columbus Day, directing the display of the US flag on all public buildings to honor the country's diverse history. The proclamation celebrates the courage, strength, and character of Italian Americans, woven into the rich tapestry of the US.
