Have We Confused Having Good Taste With Being Creative?

Cultural knowledge now functions as social currency, allowing individuals to appear creative through their consumption choices. An entire identity can be constructed solely from what someone consumes, collects, wears, and shares. While good taste requires cultural understanding, recognizing excellence differs from creating it. Curation, however, does hold creative value, with influential figures shaping culture by recognizing talent and connecting ideas. Yet, a distinction exists between being influenced and merely reproducing appearances. True creativity demands more than understanding what is already accepted. It involves taking risks, developing independent perspectives, and producing work that may not be immediately understood. We live in an era where curation can be mistaken for creation. Individuals can build a complete identity based solely on taste. Despite this, such individuals may never actually create anything that advances culture.
