The author, a software engineer and dad, bought an external camera for security and tinkering, but didn't want to use the Chinese cloud UI and shady app that came with it. He discovered Frigate, an open-source NVR with AI detection, and set it up with Docker on his Synology NAS. However, he realized that his NAS couldn't handle real-time image recognition, so he needed a new one. His wife wasn't thrilled about the idea, but he convinced her to let him buy a new server, a Shiny Minisforum MS-01. After a month, the server arrived, and he set up Proxmox on it. He then struggled to choose an OS for the workloads, considering Arch and Fedora, and eventually discovered Fedora CoreOS. He planned to build his own image, wrap it around Podman, and throw Portainer on top, but it didn't quite work out that way. The author's project, which he calls "the thing," will be available on GitHub soon, but the story is far from over.
