House Democrats clash with police, Newark mayor arrested at ICE facility

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility where a group of protesters, including House Democrats, clashed with law enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security alleges that the lawmakers "stormed" the facility, which the lawmakers' offices dispute. Footage shows the clash between law enforcement and demonstrators, including Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIver. The lawmakers claim they were attempting to investigate ICE's reopening of the Delany Hall facility to house detained migrants. The DHS spokesperson said the lawmakers put the safety of law enforcement agents and detainees at risk. The spokespersons for Watson Coleman and McIver pushed back on the claim that the lawmakers "stormed" the facility, saying they were doing their jobs and exercising their oversight authority. The incident comes as Democrats are trying to stage acts of fierce resistance to the Trump administration's hardline immigration policies. Several lawmakers have flown to El Salvador to meet with a deported Maryland man whose return has been ordered by the Supreme Court. The lawmakers' actions are seen as an attempt to investigate and resist the Trump administration's immigration policies.
