How AI is reshaping the fields of African farmers

AI is becoming critical for officials making decisions that can determine farmers' livelihoods, according to Catherine Nakalembe, a geospatial scientist. AI can reveal why certain agricultural areas are underperforming and guide large-scale interventions, but it's most effective when it incorporates local knowledge and expertise. Digital tools are evolving to help farmers adapt, with AI chatbots gaining momentum among remote smallholder farmers and extension workers. However, the recent suspension of US foreign aid may hamper efforts to get these tools into farmers' hands. Advocates say that AI can also be a powerful tool to train farmers in regenerative practices and connect them with markets, potentially creating a "path to wealth" for African farmers.
