In Airstream’s new all-electric trailer, everything runs off a battery and rooftop solar

Airstream has unveiled its new Basecamp 20Xe trailer, designed to power itself in remote locations without the need for campgrounds or utilities. The trailer features a 10.3-kilowatt lithium battery, 600 watts of rooftop solar, and an optional portable 300-watt solar panel. This allows users to power appliances like an induction stove, laptop, air-conditioning, and hot water for showers, even in the wilderness. The demand for energy independence has been growing, particularly during the pandemic when campsite availability was scarce. Airstream's previous electric model, the Trade Wind, had a smaller battery and was better suited for weekend use, but customers wanted to stay off-grid longer. The new Basecamp has four times more power and can theoretically support extended periods of off-grid camping. The trailer's battery powers all internal appliances, including the optional AC and microwave, and the heat and hot water systems. The trailer is designed to use water efficiently, with features like a recirculating shower and an optional composting toilet. However, the battery cannot assist with towing the trailer, unlike some competitor models, but Airstream is watching for opportunities to develop this feature in the future. The Basecamp 20Xe will start at $76,900.
