Instagram chief: AI is so ubiquitous 'it will be more practical to fingerprint real media than fake media'

Adam Mosseri, an Instagram executive, anticipates AI-generated content dominating the platform by 2026, significantly impacting creators. He believes the ability to be authentic, connect, and have a unique voice is threatened by AI's capabilities. Despite this, Mosseri doesn't express significant concern, acknowledging high-quality AI content. He suggests a shift toward "fingerprinting real media" instead of solely identifying fake content, particularly through camera manufacturers signing images. Social media platforms will struggle to consistently identify AI content despite best efforts. Meta's past attempts to label and detect AI content have been unreliable and ultimately unsuccessful. Mosseri indicates this is acceptable and proposes that camera makers solve the authentication challenge using their own systems. This approach may alienate photographers already frustrated with Instagram's algorithm. Mosseri claims Instagram's traditional "polished" aesthetic is obsolete, suggesting creators prioritize "raw" and "unflattering" content to prove their authenticity in an AI-dominated environment.
