Introducing sqlsimtools
Bob Ward has introduced sqlsimtools, a new suite of open-source workload simulation tools for various SQL platforms. This project is a modern reimagining of an older tool called ostress.exe, which was instrumental in reproducing customer issues for SQL Server. Sqlsimtools aims to revolutionize how users test and understand the performance of their SQL environments. It supports SQL Server 2019, 2022, and 2025, as well as Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL databases in Microsoft Fabric. The public preview includes three main components: sqlsim, a native command-line tool; sqlpysim, a Python-based alternative; and sqlsim Studio, a browser app for configuration and monitoring. Users can create custom benchmarks, stress tests, and replay captured SQL Server activity. The tools offer flexible authentication and can be run on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Sqlsimtools also facilitates before-and-after experiments for detailed performance comparisons. Workload automation is supported through JSON results and live event streams. The project encourages integration with AI agents for workload creation. Interested users can find it at aka.ms/sqlsimtools and contribute via GitHub.
