The upcoming iOS 26 Messages app will allow users to customize backgrounds for conversations, with the option to generate different looks using AI. According to recent findings, users will be able to create backgrounds using text-based descriptions, utilizing Image Playground. The feature will include various style options, such as Animation, Illustration, and Sketch, and will be customizable on a per-conversation basis. This means that users will be able to set a different background for each of their message threads on iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. The backgrounds will also sync between all participants in a Messages conversation, so everyone will see the same background. This feature is not new to messaging apps, as other platforms like WhatsApp already support custom background options, and Apple is now playing catch-up. The Messages app will also gain support for polls, automatic translation for incoming messages in other languages, and the option to create Genmoji by combining two existing standard emoji. The Genmoji mixing feature, which will be called "Mixmoji," will allow users to combine two emoji to create a new one, such as a cake and balloons for a celebration. Apple is also working on other AI-powered features, including a new version of the Shortcuts app that will use natural language to help users create powerful multi-step shortcut actions. The new iOS 26 features, including the updated Messages app, will be unveiled at WWDC 2025, which is set to begin on June 9 with a keynote event.
