Upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models might see a new camera feature distinguishing them. This rumored feature, a variable aperture, may be exclusive to the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max. While variable aperture on iPhones has been speculated since 2024, it was previously thought to be available on both Pro models. However, a leaker suggests only the Pro Max will receive this upgrade. Internal files from an Apple supplier previously indicated the iPhone 18 Pro Max would feature a new Sony sensor with variable aperture support. These files did not mention the smaller iPhone 18 Pro, leaving its aperture capabilities uncertain. Apple has never included a variable aperture on an iPhone before; current Pro models use a fixed aperture. A variable aperture lens on the iPhone 18 Pro Max could offer users manual control over depth of field, akin to DSLR cameras. This would allow for enhanced focus control and background blur effects. Previously, Apple differentiated Pro models by giving the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max a tetraprism telephoto lens absent in the smaller 15 Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is also expected to be larger and heavier, but otherwise similar to its smaller counterpart.
