Is Google Preparing to Let You Run Linux Apps on Android, Just like ChromeOS?

Google is developing a Linux terminal app for Android, which can be enabled via developer options and will install Debian in a virtual machine. The app is likely intended for Chromebooks but may also be available for mobile devices. Currently, there are limited ways to run Linux apps on Android devices, but Google is working on an official solution. The Terminal app is part of the Android Virtualization Framework and contains a WebView that connects to a Linux virtual machine via a local IP address. A set of patches was recently submitted to the Android Open Source Project, adding a new developer option called Linux terminal under Settings > System > Developer options. This option enables a "Linux terminal app that runs inside the VM" and was tested on the Pixel Tablet and Pixel 9 Pro XL. The Terminal app is still being improved by Google before it is shipped as a feature. The app will allow users to run Linux commands from the Android host. This development is significant as it will provide an official way to run Linux apps on Android devices. The Terminal app's availability on mobile devices, in addition to Chromebooks, is a possibility.
