IXI’s autofocusing lenses are almost ready to replace multifocal glasses

Traditional glasses have seen little innovation for centuries. IXI is developing autofocusing glasses to address age-related farsightedness. These glasses use cameraless eye tracking and liquid crystal lenses that adjust automatically. LEDs and photodiodes detect eye movements without using power-hungry cameras. The technology, including sensors and electronics, is integrated discreetly into lightweight frames. Batteries are comparable to those in AirPods, offering a full day of use on a single charge. Prototype frames are designed to look like normal, stylish eyeglasses. The liquid crystal lenses are thin and can incorporate existing prescriptions and astigmatism correction. These autofocusing lenses could eliminate the need for bifocals or progressives. Beyond vision correction, the technology may offer insights into dry eyes, attentiveness, and posture. IXI is working towards medical certifications and plans to launch the glasses next year as a high-end option.
