Kodak pauses film production for factory upgrades to help meet demand

Eastman Kodak has temporarily halted film production to upgrade and modernize its Rochester, New York factory. The shutdown, announced by CEO Jim Continenza, will allow the company to improve its manufacturing process to meet increased demand for film. Film sales have been rising, including in motion picture and still film, prompting the need for modernization. The factory will be shut down completely in November to allow for the upgrades, which will bring the facility up to date. Despite the shutdown, Kodak film availability is not expected to be affected, as the company has increased production in recent months. The investment in the factory will also involve building up inventories before the shutdown. In recent years, Kodak has seen a resurgence in demand for film, with production more than doubling between 2015 and 2019. The company remains committed to manufacturing film as long as there is demand from filmmakers and photographers. The continued popularity of film is not only driven by Hollywood filmmakers but also by Gen Z, who appreciate the unique aesthetic and process of analog photography. The shutdown is a strategic move to ensure Kodak can continue to meet the growing demand for its film products.
