Križanke in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Jože Plečnik renovated a former Teutonic knights' monastery in Ljubljana in 1952, converting it into an outdoor concert venue. The complex, situated in the city center, included a church, cloisters, a prior's residence, and gardens. Plečnik transformed the monastery's vegetable garden into an outdoor theater with a stepped seating arrangement inspired by ancient Greek theaters. However, he adapted the design to accommodate a proscenium arch format with a gentler slope. The performance area was surrounded by a low wall, allowing those outside to enjoy the music. A public garden was created beyond the performance area, making the venue accessible to all. One of Plečnik's most striking designs at Križanke is "The Devil's Court," a secluded space with low benches and embedded lamps that create a mesmerizing effect at night. Today, Križanke is a thriving cultural venue, hosting numerous concerts and serving as the home of Festival Ljubljana. The annual festival brings world-class classical music to the city, making Križanke a vibrant hub of cultural activity. Plečnik's renovation of the monastery has resulted in a unique and captivating outdoor concert venue that continues to enrich the city's cultural landscape.
