Kubernetes on Hybrid Cloud: Service traffic topology and routing

Kubernetes is a powerful tool for managing container workloads, but using it in a hybrid cloud environment can be challenging, especially with networking and traffic routing. The default round-robin algorithm for sharing traffic between nodes is not always the best for hybrid clouds. In a hybrid Kubernetes environment, poor network traffic routing can lead to higher latency and lower performance, as well as increased cloud costs. Optimizing traffic routing can ensure that network traffic moves efficiently between nodes, reducing latency, improving performance, and lowering costs. Kubernetes has an internal traffic policy that allows control over how traffic moves inside the cluster, with the default policy sending traffic to any available endpoint within the cluster. The internalTrafficPolicy: Local setting ensures that traffic only goes to endpoints on the same node, which is helpful for workloads needing low latency and high speed. Topology-aware routing is another feature that helps optimize network traffic based on the physical location of nodes, allowing rules to be set for services to stay within the same region or availability zone whenever possible. The trafficDistribution: PreferClose setting helps send traffic to the closest endpoint in the zone, making it more suitable for hybrid cloud environments. By using internal traffic policies and traffic distribution settings, traffic can be optimized to move efficiently between nodes, reducing latency, improving performance, and lowering costs. In a hybrid Kubernetes environment, traffic routing is crucial for optimizing network performance and reducing costs.
