Legion Go S powered by SteamOS review: A purpose-built OS makes all the difference

Lenovo's Legion Go S, now available with SteamOS, offers a significant improvement over its Windows 11 counterpart. The SteamOS version boasts superior performance and a more user-friendly interface tailored for gaming. This enhanced performance is attributed to SteamOS's lower system overhead compared to Windows. The device features a large 8-inch 1200p display, comfortable grips, and hall-effect joysticks. While lacking detachable joysticks and a fingerprint reader, it includes dual USB-C ports and a microSD card slot. The reviewed Ryzen Z1 Extreme model offered better performance than both the Windows Legion Go S and the Steam Deck in several tested games. Battery life is improved compared to the Windows version, lasting approximately 30 minutes longer. Despite a higher starting price than initially anticipated, the Legion Go S with SteamOS presents a compelling alternative to the Steam Deck. Its larger screen, better ergonomics, and superior performance in demanding games make it a strong contender in the handheld gaming market. The optimized SteamOS experience further enhances its appeal.
