Library of Congress gets collection of pioneering Chicano journalist Raúl Ruiz

The Library of Congress recently acquired the Raúl Ruiz Chicano Movement Collection, a significant archive documenting the Chicano Movement. This collection includes photographs and manuscripts created by Raúl Ruiz, a prominent journalist and activist. Ruiz's work focused on advocating for Mexican American rights in Los Angeles during the 1960s and 1970s. He was the editor of La Raza newspaper and magazine, a key publication of the movement. The collection contains approximately 17,500 photos and nearly 10,000 manuscript pages. These materials cover important events like the East LA Walkouts and the Chicano Moratorium. The acquisition was donated by Ruiz's daughter and a university professor. The collection also features iconic images, including photos related to the death of journalist Rubén Salazar. The acquisition occurred near the end of Carla Hayden's tenure as Librarian of Congress, following criticism. Concerns exist that the collection's online presence might be affected by current administration policies.
