Local alkalinity enables high-performance pure water anion exchange membrane electrolysis

Current anion exchange membrane water electrolysers are hindered by poor performance in pure water. Here, the authors report a strategy that creates built-in alkaline microenvironments, enabling high performance and long-term stability using only pure water.
