Hakim and coworkers show that loss of the nuclear-envelope protein NEMP1 leads to female infertility in both flies and mice, due to DNA damage in oocytes and activation of an ATM-CHK2 checkpoint. In mice, synapsis and chromosome pairing is also disrupted.
