Mac Studio M7 Ultra Expected in 2028 With Better Cooling

Apple is planning two future Mac Studio updates according to Mark Gurman. The first refresh is anticipated this year, featuring the M5 Ultra chip. This will be followed by a more substantial update in 2028 with the M7 Ultra chip. Apple is expected to bypass M6 Ultra chips entirely. This decision stems from a broader shift in Apple's silicon roadmap, where higher-end M6 Pro and Max chips are reportedly canceled in favor of M7. The M7 lineup is slated to focus heavily on AI and GPU performance. Consequently, the Mac Studio will jump directly from M5 Ultra to M7 Ultra. While the 2026 M5 Ultra model is not expected to have a significant redesign, the 2028 M7 Ultra version is rumored to feature new internal architecture and an improved heatsink. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio's launch was reportedly delayed from earlier in 2026 due to memory chip supply and cost issues. Apple has explored supporting up to 768GB of unified memory for the device, but supply limitations might restrict this. An October launch for the M5 version remains uncertain, especially with current M3 Ultra Mac Studio deliveries extending into October.
