Sharing specific text passages from webpages with others can be streamlined using text fragment links. Google Chrome introduced this feature in 2020, enabling direct linking to highlighted text portions. This functionality has expanded to other Chromium-based browsers like Edge and Opera. Safari, starting with macOS Sequoia, also supports this feature natively through "Copy Link with Highlight." Users select text, right-click, and choose "Copy Link with Highlight" to create a special URL. This generated URL includes a hash and "text" element to pinpoint the selected content. When a recipient clicks the link, the specific text passage is highlighted on the page. The "Copy Link to Highlight" feature is also available on iPhone and iPad Safari. However, this feature experiences some inconsistencies on iOS. Highlighted text appearance may vary based on website styling. Additionally, text fragment linking does not function with PDF documents. Copy link to highlight has also been introduced in Firefox starting July 2025.
