Apple revealed that macOS 26 Tahoe will be the final version compatible with Intel-based Macs. These Intel Macs will receive full features and security updates for three years. Apple plans to fully transition away from Intel processors by 2028, ending support for these older machines. This shift follows Apple's move to its own, more efficient Apple Silicon chips since 2020. Apple Silicon uses an ARM-based architecture offering performance and battery advantages. The announcement was made at a Platform State of the Union event targeted at app developers. Apple encourages developers to prepare for the transition to Apple Silicon. MacOS 26 and 27 will include Rosetta translation for x86 apps on ARM. Rosetta will remain to specifically support legacy video games. Supported Intel Macs include specific MacBook Pro and iMac models, as well as the Mac Pro.
