Malaysia lifts ban on Grok after taking X at its word

Malaysia has lifted its ban on Elon Musk's Grok chatbot, which was initially imposed due to concerns about the generation of deepfake sexualized images. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) blocked access after reports of the AI creating such content, particularly involving women and children. This temporary halt was intended to give X Corp and xAI time to implement necessary safeguards. The MCMC has now confirmed it is satisfied with the safety measures put in place by X. However, Malaysian authorities stated they will continue to monitor the platform closely. Malaysia and Indonesia were the only countries to officially ban Grok. In response to the scandal, X has updated its image-editing policies, prohibiting the alteration of images of real people in revealing attire. A UK regulator also opened an investigation into X, and a non-profit organization estimated millions of sexualized images were generated by Grok in a short period. The majority of these were of adults, but a significant number involved children.
