Marques Brownlee's controversial Panels app is shutting down

Marques Brownlee's Panels app, a wallpaper marketplace launched in 2024, is closing down on December 31 due to development team challenges. The developers were unable to find collaborators who aligned with their vision for the app's future. Annual subscribers will receive refunds, and downloaded wallpapers will remain accessible. The app's code will be released publicly to encourage further development by others. Panels gained initial popularity but faced controversy due to its high subscription price. Consumers also criticized the app for intrusive ads and data-tracking requirements. MKBHD attempted to address these issues with a cheaper subscription tier. However, the negative reception and the difficulty in monetizing smartphone wallpapers ultimately led to the app's demise. The concept of paid wallpapers is no longer appealing as smartphones have become commonplace.
