Meet the Man Doing a 10-Day, Self-Supported Swim Across a 140-Mile Lake

Shane Schieffer is undertaking an ambitious challenge to swim the entire 140-mile length of Lake Powell. He aims to complete this feat in just 10 days, traveling from Hite Crossing Bridge in Utah to Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona. This journey is entirely self-supported, meaning his crew will not provide food, navigation, or pacing. To manage his supplies, Schieffer is using a custom-designed floating rig made from an inflatable paddleboard. This rig is equipped with solar power, water filtration, and dry boxes for food and waste storage. He is committed to leaving no trace of his passage. Schieffer, aged 49, anticipates consuming 8000 calories daily and estimates performing around 200,000 shoulder rotations. The challenge began on September 2nd, making it day three of his expedition. Updates on his progress are being shared on Instagram.
