Mercedes-AMG is shifting away from its four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain and returning to its traditional inline-six and V-8 powertrains. The decision is in response to customer criticisms, despite the four-cylinder being one of the most advanced and high-performing drivetrains available. The four-cylinder failed to resonate with traditional AMG customers, who preferred the sound and performance of V-8 engines. AMG remains committed to plug-in hybrids, but wants to offer different drivetrain options to customers. The four-cylinder powertrain was criticized for its lackluster sound and increased curb weight, which negated its performance benefits. The current C63's hybrid system was particularly criticized for its "reedy" and "buzzy" sound. AMG has not confirmed when the four-cylinder will be phased out, but it will eventually be replaced. The company will continue to produce the four-cylinder for the time being. AMG chief Michael Schiebe emphasized the advantages of combining electric motors with combustion engines. The shift away from the four-cylinder is a response to customer feedback, rather than a change of heart about the technology itself.
