Meta gets EU regulator nod to train AI with social media content

Meta can now train its AI using publicly shared content from its social media platforms in the EU. This includes posts, comments, and interactions across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. The company aims to improve its AI models by understanding European communities' nuances. Private messages and data from users under 18 remain off-limits. Users can opt out of having their data used for AI training through a dedicated form. Meta previously delayed training after complaints from privacy advocates. The Irish Data Protection Commission reviewed Meta's approach. Meta claims its training approach meets legal obligations and is similar to practices of Google and OpenAI. The EU launched its AI Act, establishing a legal framework for the technology, focusing on data quality and privacy. X previously stopped using personal data from EU users to train its AI chatbot.
