Meta’s Ray-Bans Have Sold 2 Million Pairs, Total, as of February
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously projected selling one million Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in 2024, with potential to reach five million by late 2025. However, EssilorLuxottica, the manufacturer, has revealed that two million pairs have been sold since their October 2023 launch. EssilorLuxottica is now targeting an annual production of ten million Meta glasses by the end of 2026. This sales figure is significant, though not yet comparable to early smartphone adoption rates. The author believes smart glasses will become a major product category in the future. However, they are not yet a mainstream hit. Current capabilities, like a camera and speakers, do not offer a compelling advantage over smartphones and wireless earbuds. The author questions when a user would prefer the glasses for basic functions like photography or audio. They argue that widespread adoption will require a heads-up display integrated into the lenses. This advanced feature, however, still appears to be years away.
