Mexico is suing Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on Google Maps for users in the United States. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the lawsuit but didn't specify when or where it was filed. Sheinbaum contends that the US government's authority regarding the name change is limited to the US portion of the gulf. The Mexican government's primary goal is to enforce the US government's decree concerning the name. Google changed the name on its Maps app in February, after announcing it in January. Google stated that it was following the US government's official name change reflected in the GNIS. The Mexican government protested the change and threatened legal action before the lawsuit. Google's policy is to display official local names, thus the "Gulf of Mexico" outside the US. Outside of the US and Mexico, the gulf is labeled "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)." The lawsuit highlights a disagreement over geographical naming conventions and national authority.
