Microsoft's ill-fated Surface Duo 2 recieves one final security patch

Microsoft has released what is likely to be the final software update for the Surface Duo 2, a security patch, ahead of its end-of-support date on October 21. The company had initially promised to provide three years of software updates for the dual-screen device, which was launched in October 2021. However, the Surface Duo 2 has only received one platform update, from Android 11 to Android 12L, whereas the original Surface Duo received two updates, from Android 10 to Android 11 and then to Android 12L. This is a relatively poor showing compared to other Android manufacturers, some of which promise up to seven generations of platform updates. The Surface Duo 2 was launched at a premium price of $1,500, making its limited software support even more disappointing. The device's software was always a weakness, with an inconsistent user experience noted in reviews. Microsoft's shift in focus towards AI has seemingly led to its Surface portfolio being neglected. In fact, the company had canceled some of its more ambitious projects, which reportedly contributed to Panos Panay's departure. The Surface Duo 2's limited software support is a shame, given its compelling hardware. Overall, the device's short software lifespan is a letdown, especially considering its high price point.
