Oshio, Shiiba and colleagues show that HMOX2, which catalyses haem degradation, supplies haem-derived iron to mitochondria at ER–mitochondria contact sites in a process mediated by the mitochondrial ubiquitin ligase MITOL, also known as MARCH5/MARCHF5.
