More Android phones with Qi2 wireless charging will finally show up in 2025

The Wireless Power Consortium announced at CES that more Android devices will adopt the MagSafe-based Qi2 charging standard in 2025. The Qi2 standard requires a magnetic alignment ring, but not all phones will have it built-in. The WPC introduced a "Qi2 Ready" certification for phones that meet the standard's specs but need a case to add the magnetic ring. This could explain rumors that Samsung's Galaxy S25 phones will require a case for magnetic charging. Google has committed to the Qi2 standard and is contributing its own high-power wireless charging technology. Currently, most Android phones need a case with an embedded magnet for MagSafe-style wireless charging. Apple has been the only manufacturer to equip its phones with the magnetic ring required for Qi2 certification. The WPC also announced that a future part of the Qi2 standard will include in-car wireless charging with a moving coil that shifts to keep aligned with the phone's coil. This technology was contributed by Panasonic Automotive Systems and is part of the Qi v2.1 update. The moving coil and Qi2 Ready certification are both part of this update.
