NaNoWriMo is in disarray after organizers defend AI writing tools

NaNoWriMo, the organization behind National Novel Writing Month, has faced criticism for its stance on using AI writing tools. NaNoWriMo announced that it doesn't explicitly support or condemn AI use, arguing that opposing it would be "classist and ableist." The organization believes AI tools can reduce the financial burden of hiring human writing assistants and help people with different abilities. However, many writers and creatives have criticized the statement, arguing that generative AI tools devalue human art and are exploitative. Some disabled writers also disagreed with the inference that they need AI tools to write effectively. Star Wars: The High Republic's lead story architect, Daniel José Older, resigned from the NaNoWriMo Writers Board in response to the statement. NaNoWriMo later updated its post to acknowledge concerns about the impact of generative AI tools on the writing industry.
