NASA’s Perseverance Sets Off-World Record for Total Distance Driven
The Perseverance rover has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the vehicle to travel the farthest distance outside of Earth. On October 11th, it surpassed the previous record held by NASA's Opportunity rover. Perseverance reached 28.10 miles driven on the Martian surface, a distance Opportunity took nearly 15 years to accumulate. The Perseverance rover achieved this on its 2,006th Martian day. Despite its slow top speed of 0.1 mph and frequent stops for scientific work, covering 28 miles is a remarkable feat. The rover's travel path is described as resembling a dog's, with backtracking along explored routes. This accomplishment highlights the rover's extensive exploration of Mars. In comparison, the Guinness World Record for a vehicle driven on Earth is over 3 million miles. The Perseverance rover's journey continues to contribute valuable data from the Red Planet.
