Tequila, a popular Mexican hard liquor, has its own holiday, National Tequila Day, celebrated on July 24. The history of tequila dates back to the Aztecs, who fermented the sap of the agave plant to create a milky beverage called pulque. The Spanish arrived in Mexico in 1517 and began experimenting with agave to create a brandy substitute. The Marquis of Altamira opened the first major distillery in the early 1600s, and the Cuervo and Sauza families later commercialized tequila production. Tequila was first imported to the US in 1873 and gained popularity during Prohibition and with the invention of the margarita in the 1940s. In 1974, Mexico declared tequila its intellectual property, and the Tequila Regulatory Council was formed in 1994 for quality control. The shift to 100% agave tequila in the 1990s further elevated the liquor's reputation. Today, the US is tequila's largest customer, with over 32 million cases sold in 2024. To celebrate National Tequila Day, several restaurants are offering special deals, including $5 tequila shots and margaritas at Chili's, Chuy's, Margaritas Mexican Restaurant, Hooters, and Red Robin.
